The StFX Intramural Basketball League Constitution:

2024 – 2025
Intramural Basketball Constitution

 SECTION -1- League Membership Responsibilities

  1. Before the regular season begins all teams must provide StFX Intramurals with team contact information. Contact information should include a team captain who will represent the team and players in all intramural basketball matters during the year, as well as an alternative captain, in case of suspension or unavailability.

  1. Team captain meetings are mandatory. Each team must be represented at these meetings, failing to do so can result in the suspension of the team.

  1. All contact information is due to the coordinators before a team is considered registered.

  1. Jersey color should be agreed upon with each team before the game begins. Must be distinguishable – one team dark, one team light colored.

  1. The onus is on the registered team to read and understand the policies and regulations of the league. It is the responsibility of the team captain to ensure that eligibility guidelines are enforced.

  1. Any team member must have a valid student ID on their person while on the bench.

  1. Any team member conducting unsportsmanlike behavior or consuming alcohol, or substances will be asked to leave. Game will be paused until the player has left the court.

SECTION – 2 – Registration Requirements

Each person shall provide StFX Intramurals:

  1. A registration fee of $500 per team (tax included and non-refundable) must be collected from each team before the predetermined deadline.

  1. Fees may be subject to change based on the number of registered participants; therefore, teams may be required to pay more/less.

  1. A list of players must be provided before the opening game of the season. Once the season has begun first semester, no players will be allowed to enter the league after deadline UNLESS there is second semester “free agency”.

  1. There shall be no more than 14* players on a team.

  1. Players do not need to purchase a jersey, but they must have a reversible to wear or other clothing item that can distinguish between light and dark colors.

  1. There will be no refunds after registration has occurred unless extreme circumstances have occurred (i.e. injury that occurred during XBL/WXBL game).

 SECTION – 3 – Player Eligibility

  1. Any team using an illegal player during playoffs will forfeit their series.

  1. There shall be no trading of players from one team to another.

  1. Any team that plays against an illegal player and conceals this knowledge from the league until it suits their convenience will be viewed as equally guilty. Therefore, they will not be allowed to make the playoffs.

  1. Before any games, all players must be able to prove their status as a StFX University student via their student ID card if questioned.

SECTION – 7 – Regular Season and Playoffs

  1. Intramural Basketball League is solely supported financially on registration fees. The league has to be cost efficient and has the power to create a league that will not go into debt. Therefore, the number of games the league consists of will depend on how many teams register.

  1. Playoff details will be announced near the end of the regular season and will depend on how many teams register for the Intramural Basketball League. The more teams, the more money, equals more teams making the playoffs.

  1. Dates for the start of the regular season and playoffs will depend on the availability of gym time.

SECTION – 8 - League Point System and Tie Breaking

  1. In regular season, teams will be ranked by points for and against. Points will be added from every game, 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss, and the team with the most points will be ranked first etc.

  1. If there are more than two teams tied, the team that beats all other tied teams will advance. If the tie is still not decided, it will go to which team has the best average between the tied teams.

  1. If after the first 20-minute half one team is in the lead by 40 or more points, then the team in the lead will automatically win. If a team takes a lead of 40 or more points after the first half the game will continue as planned.

  1. Any player with 2 or more technical fouls in one game will be ejected from the game.

Team Strike System

The basketball leagues have a 3-strike suspension approach. In the event of a suspension to any participating player on a team, that team will be given 1 strike against their record. Forfeiting a game within 24- hour notice without a valid reason will result in a strike. If a team hits 2 strikes to their record, a meeting with the entire team, intramural team lead, intramural basketball coordinators and other relative representatives will be held to discuss potential discipline if these behaviors continue. Any member not in attendance will be suspended indefinitely. If a team manages to accumulate 3 strikes, they shall be removed from the basketball league without reimbursement, with no chance at an appeal. Supplemental discipline may also be applied from other sources. Players will receive a verbal warning, followed by a written warning, and finally, the team will be removed from the league with no refund.

  1. Once a game has been scheduled, it must be met.

  1. Games can be rescheduled by intramurals if necessary (i.e. facility problems)
